Can We Sleep Less and Still Function?
by Kacper M. Postawski, www.PowerfulSleep.com
A parent or grandparent
likely warned you at one time or another to not sleep less than
8 hours. 8 hours of sleep somehow became the daily-recommended dosage
of sleep that we have always abided by without question. Its origin
is believed to be the result of the industrial revolution when life
was broken into shift work, personal/family time and sleep.
Breaking the 24-hour day
into 8-hour intervals seemed to be the simplest way to manage life.
Yet we often view 8 hours of sleep as a definite requirement for
our body. If we sleep less we often remark that we are drowsy, tired
and battling fatigue because we didn't get enough sleep. There is
increasing evidence that it may not be the actual amount of sleep
but rather the sleep quality that matters the most, even if we sleep
less than the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recommended nine hours.
To sleep less and function we must establish our own inner sleep
clock. The inner sleep clock gets us sleepy and into bed at the
same time each night to arise at the same time each morning. Whether
you sleep less than 8 hours is ultimately irrelevant because your
body will gradually adjust accordingly to whatever time is allocated
for sleep each night.
The key to sleep less while maintaining your
alertness or energy level is to optimize sleep. As children many
of us had a regular bedtime each night. This is perfectly healthy.
In fact, a regular bedtime is nothing but good thing! The problem
comes when bedtime is forced whether you are actually tired or not.
Remember running around playing as a child and suddenly, without
warning, it was time for bed? You would pathetically cry that you
weren't tired but those cries most likely went to deaf ears. You
would spend considerable time in bed fussing, tossing and turning
and pretty much forcing yourself to fall asleep simply because you
had to. Believe it or not many adults still fall victim to this
bad habit. Time spent in bed worrying about sleep will ultimately
lead to sleep disorders like insomnia or a dependency on sleep medications
to "make yourself sleepy" regardless of whether or not
you are actually tired.
It is essential to avoid this mistake by going
to bed when we you can no longer keep your eyes open or hold your
head up. You will likely figure out that this just happens to be
around the same time each night. You will also find yourself routinely
awakening at the same time each day without the need for an alarm
clock. Our body has its very own clock and sometimes it's just a
matter of figuring it out and training it. You can train your body
to sleep less and reap the benefits of a squeezing a few extra hours
into your day to accomplish goals that would otherwise be impossible
while sleeping.
